Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) Military comedy drama set during the Vietnam War
Inspired by the experiences of Adrian Cronauer, a former US Air Force sergeant and innovative AFRS radio DJ based in Saigon during the Vietnam War, Good Morning Vietnam might be Hollywood’s first Vietnam comedy, but at the same time is deadly serious anti-war film.
In 1965, unorthodox disc jockey Adrian Cronauer is assigned to take over a morning show of the Armed Forces Radio Service in Saigon. While his predecessors were mostly dull and boring, Cronauer is a bundle of dynamite bringing some fresh air into the broadcast. Each of his programs is initiated with a loud "Goooood morniiiiing, Vietnaaaaam" followed by irreverent humor and comedy segments, criticism of the war and American politicians and lots of rock and roll music, all of course in defiance of station rules.
His direct superiors, Second Lieutenant Steven Hauk, who adheres to strict Army guidelines in terms of humor and music, and the mean and abusive Sergeant Major Phillip Dickerson disapprove of Cronauer’s programming; however, the troops, other DJs and even Brigadier General Taylor enjoy the program and Cronauer’s popularity grows constantly.
But when the radio host escapes a bomb attack and decides to tell his listeners the truth about it instead of spreading the official government version, the broadcast is cut off, Cronauer suspended and replaced by the unfunny Hauk. With Dickerson trying to find a way to get rid of Cronauer permanently, Cronauer struggles to get back on air.
Good Morning, Vietnam was mostly received positively and a huge success. The film won numerous awards including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and an American Comedy Award for Funniest Actor for Robin Williams who portrayed Adrian Cronauer.
