Military Courtesy (1949)
Illustrated Army Field Manual (FM 21-14)
Saluting is a major part of the military discipline. Every military service in the world has a very strict regulatory framework about this issue and it might be surprising to some on how complicated or complex this can be. In 1949 the U.S. Army used a comic book approach creating the field manual FM 21-14 to reach semi-literate recruits who were turned into soldiers and teach them on how to salute, when to salute, whom to salute and other military courtesy.
It is a great glimpse into the old "brown shoe" army of the 1940s!
Military discipline is prompt, intelligent, willing, and cheerful obedience to the will of the leader. Its basis is the voluntary subordination of the individual to the welfare of the group. It is the cementing force which binds the members of unit; which endures after the leader has fallen and every semblance of authority has vanished – it is the spirit of the military team.
