M16a1 Comic Book Maintenance Manual - DA PAM 750-30 (1969)
Illustrated by famed Disney artist Will Eisner
The M16a1 Comic Book Maintenance Manual from 1969 was distributed to soldiers during the Vietnam war. It was illustrated by the famed Disney artist Will Eisner. The M16a1 comic is a beautiful piece of art that uses a very “sexy” approach on how to maintain your rifle. Obviously playing with ambiguous language and phrases like “Lube these parts generously!” plus the female illustrations found great fans among the soldiers that were lucky enough to get their hands on one of the highly sought after copies.
Will Eisner (William Erwin Eisner) was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry. He was recognized internationally as one of the giants in the field of sequential art. In his career that spanned nearly seventy years and eight decades - from the dawn of the comic book to the advent of digital comics - he truly was the father of the Graphic Novel.
He broke new ground in the development of visual narrative and the language of comics and was the creator of The Spirit, John Law, Lady Luck, Mr. Mystic, Uncle Sam, Blackhawk, Sheena and countless others. One of the comic industry's most prestigious awards, The Eisner Award, was named after him. Eisner passed away in 2005 (aged 87).
